On 30 October 1986, Yoshio Ogata, Yasuhiro Hashimoto and Hirotaka Imamura made the first ascent of Gyala Peri (7,294 m) in the Nyenchen Tanglha Shan massif in Tibet, via the south ridge, after around six weeks of attempts. They were the lead party of a six-person Japanese expedition led by Kazuo Tobita; the other three members – Takeshi Ohta, Takuo Fujiwara and the expedition leader himself – did not reach the summit.
